Summary/Abstract: In September 2017, the first lesson in physical education, called A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body was carried out. It appeared as part of the programme accompanying the exhibition Art, Sports and Heritage. The lesson is set in a national school in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1932 and pupils perform exercises following the sokol system. The article goes on to present the introduction of physical education as a school subject. In 1869 the law introduced mandatory teaching of physical education in primary schools, and in 1871 also in real schools and schools for teachers. In grammar schools, physical education was introduced as a non-obligatory subject in 1849. There follows an overview of the development of physical education in Slovenia during the period of Habsburg Monarchy, i.e. Austria Hungary (1849 to 1914), the period of the old Yugoslavia (1919 to 1941) and the period in second Yugoslavia from 1945–1958.
