Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present politeness as a fundamental socio-pragmatic phenomenon that regulates and strengthens social harmony among professionals in the sphere of international relations. The study is based on approaches in the theory of politeness and broadens the perspective to highlight the importance of politeness in the highly ritualised diplomatic sphere, which is adjusted to conventional norms and to the positive image aspired to by interlocutors. The study contributes to highlighting the cohesion between universal norms of politeness and those specific to diplomatic language.
