Summary/Abstract: In the 1990s, in the process of drafting the first strategic documents of European spatial development, a consensus was reached that the concept that should be followed if greater economic competitiveness, social equality, and sustainable development is to be achieved, is the concept of polycentrism. The aim of this paper is to define the concept of polycentric development on the basis of theoretical and analytical works in the field of urban, economic and regional geography and in the field of regional development and spatial planning, ie to present its basic theoretical and methodological principles.
