Summary/Abstract: Splitting is one of the most important primitive and immature defense mechanisms. It causes the individual not to perceive the object as a whole with its good and bad features. This perception leads to realizing only the good features of the object that is determined as good in distinguishing the good and bad features, not perceiving the bad aspects, and completely denying the good aspects of the object that is determined as bad. One of the concepts that may be related to the splitting defense mechanism is schema modes. A person can take part in different modes in his daily life and changes in mood can be seen depending on these modes. Therefore, it can be said that schema modes have important effects on mental health and well-being. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the splitting defense mechanism and schema modes. A total of 537 (364 female and 173 male) university students between the ages of 18-34 years (M = 20.36, SD = 2.09) studying at different universities in the cities of Elazig and Ankara participated in the study. Participants were asked to complete the Short Schema Mode Scale, the Splitting Scale, and the Demographic Information Form includes personal information. Findings of the present study indicated the small-to-moderate and significant relationship between schema modes and splitting. The regression analysis indicates that the impulsive child and the angry child mode, which are among the child schema modes; compliant surrender, self-aggrandizer, detached protector and detached self-soother which are maladaptive coping modes; and the punishing parent and demanding parent mode variables, which are among the dysfunctional parent schema modes, significantly and positively predicted the splitting levels of the participants, while the healthy adult mode did not significantly predict the splitting. The findings were dis-cussed in the light of schema therapy and schema mode approach and some suggestions were made.
