Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze the evolution of the theory of the social production of space and reflect on its relevance and application in contemporary urban studies. We present the development of this concept from Henri Lefebvre’s fundamental ideas, through their extensions and reinterpretations, to the latest approaches that address the challenges of the digital era. In our discussion, we highlight the theory’s potential in analyzing contemporary urban phenomena, while simultaneously identifying the challenges it faces. We conclude that despite the challenges associated with operationalizing some concepts, the theory of the social production of space remains not only relevant but also a valuable analytical tool, capable of capturing the complexity of contemporary urban processes, provided it is continuously updated and its methodology is critically reflected upon.
