When do spaces matter? Reflections on the changes concerning joint and separate spelling

Summary/Abstract: Taking into account the history of Polish orthography in the past century, the ar cle discusses and assesses the changes concerning joint and separate spelling that will be in force from 2026. First, spelling varia on is examined and contrasted with the situa on when graphic variants are not seman cally iden cal. The changes announced by the Council for the Polish Language expand the scope of variants, limit the exis ng variability or completely change the regula ons. The aim of the changes is to simplify Polish spelling, among others by limi ng the number of apparent variants with diff erent meaning. The analysis proves that crea ng a clear set of spelling rules that will not raise any interpreta ve doubts is in fact a kind of utopia.
