Where the b Phoneme in the Word ząb Is, Or How Contemporary Polish ABC Books Create the Terms 'Phoneme' and 'Letter'

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to explore how selected Polish contemporary ABC books create the key terms of 'letter' and 'phoneme' while teaching to read and to write. The discussion focuses on the applied strategies to differentiate between the sound and graphic structures as well as on the distortion between graphic and sound equivalents. The conducted analysis proves that contemporary publishing market offers elementary school teachers didactic aids full of crucial mistakes and inconsistent solutions, which has to result in methodological failure.
