Summary/Abstract: Thanks to his Elektra written in 1904, Hugo von Hofmannsthal went down in history as a significant author in the field of drama as well as music. He created the libretto to one of the most famous expressionistic operas, Elektra by Richard Strauss. Despite the apparent references to the tragedy of Sophocles, the author’s main source of inspiration was the philosophical and artistic spirit of the time: the ubiquitous fascination with symbolism and the theories of Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Wagner and Sigmund Freud were reflected in a work of drama and hereby presented in opera houses worldwide.
