Summary/Abstract: The present paper gives an insight into how the contemporary Hungarian intellectuals in Bratislava reflected on the steps and plans of the Hungarian Minister of Religion and Public Education, Baron Gyula Wlassics, in the columns of the Hungarian daily newspaper Nyugatmagyarországi Hiradó in Bratislava between 1895 and 1903. The period of Wlassics was marked by the approval of some of the reform laws in Hungarian church policy (secularisation), as well as a series of educational reforms (the establishment of hundreds of public schools, the admission of women to certain university faculties, etc.) The Hungarian elite in Bratislava and Bratislava County at the time followed the minister’s steps in the field of national education and the gradual Hungarianisation of schools, as the Bratislava region was also one of the multi-ethnic regions of contemporary Hungary. The authors of the paper also dealt with various aspects of physical education in schools, the status of teachers and women’s education (for example, they called for the establishment of a girls’ secondary school).
