Summary/Abstract: The presented paper is an attempt to describe the mechanisms of composing meaning in the visual code (understood analogously to the processes of composingmeaning in the verbal code, i.e. the creation of rhetorical figures) based on portrait drawings and bas-reliefs made by students of the Władysław StrzemińskiAcademy of Fine Arts in Łódź. The collected data were analyzed in terms of the significant formal structures in the functions of inventio, dispositio and elocutio.In this way, the principles of meaning composition were sought in terms of the organization of content, through compositional arrangements and in relation tohierarchical exponents providing formal means. The observations highlighted an analogy between visual perception and meaning composition in visual com-munication. Students often struggled to create meaning without distortion. The identified mechanisms, such as alienation and form complication, link to shiftsin processing at syntactic and semantic levels. These changes, defined by cognitive mechanisms (detractio, adjectio, transmutatio, substitutio), are connectedto metacognition.
