Examining Employment Changes Caused by the Coronavirus Crisis in Slovakian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

Summary/Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemics started in 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and it has grown into the most challenging social phenomena to date. The emergence of the virus has had drastic consequences, both for health and for the global economy. Its economic effects are still significant today, so research on this topic is current. Our study examines the types of employment changes most commonly introduced as a result of the coronavirus and their effects on employment. The methodology chosen was a questionnaire survey. The first part of the questionnaire focused on unemployed respondents, with the aim of examining the possible causes of unemployment. The second part of survey analyses respondents with an active employment relationship. In the latter segment, the survey focused on the effects of changes in the workplace. From the results obtained, we found that there is a significant relationship between the cause of unemployment of unemployed respondents and the appearance of the coronavirus. Half of the unemployed people lost their jobs after the coronavirus appeared. A further result of the survey was that the most common change in the employment after the crisis was the introduction of home-office work, followed by unpaid leave, shorter working weeks and other measures. Based on our sample, we found that the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic affected every segment of the labor market (unemployed, employed).
