Summary/Abstract: Objectives: The study aimed to learn about the knowledge of Polish society and the opinions of experts on the different areas of the functioning of surrogate parenthood and the challenges arising from implementing this function. Material and methods: Research material was obtained using a parallel triangulation strategy. Quantitative research was carried out using computer-aided telephone and internet interviews. In the qualitative part of the study, the method of in-depth individual interviews was used. Results: The research results indicate that more than half of the respondents have not encountered the profession of a foster parent, and some respondents associate this profession with adoption. Research shows that the profession of a foster parent is not respected, it is one of the most underestimated professions in Poland and the majority of respondents do not recommend working in this profession. Respondents described the profession of a foster parent as difficult, requiring special skills and extensive support. Conclusions: It seems necessary to build a positive public image of foster parenting, expand knowledge and social awareness of the functions and tasks performed by foster carers, and expand and strengthen the support system for foster parents in carrying out their tasks.
