Summary/Abstract: This article examines the essence of the concept of reading competence and pays attention to the ongoing process of its formation from the first grade during the study of works of various genres and styles in the 605 2nd grade. It is accepted that satisfactorily formed reading competence is the main tool for successful entry into Bulgarian writing. Within the framework of the outlined theoretical context, an analysis of a survey among primary teachers was made, aiming to emphasize the importance of the problem and make reasonable recommendations for improving the educational process in the specific pedagogical and linguistic situations.
