Pagel and his "Biographical directory of prominent physicians of the 19th century"

Summary/Abstract: Professor Julius Leopold Pagel (1851–1912) was a German physician and a historian of medicine, whose masterpiece “Biographical Directory of the prominent physicians of the nineteenth century” (“Biographisches Lexikon Hervorragender Arzte des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts”) was published in 1901 by “Urban & Schwarzenberg” publishing house. (editorial finalized on August 25, 1900). The volume, which contains 3529 articles and 669 portraits, arranged in 1984 columns, is of such importance to the history of medicine, that in 1989 it was re-published and uploaded on the World Wide Web. Convinced that “the history of society is the history of medicine” in writing a short biographical essays, the author shows phenomenal detail and such a remarkable awareness of popular medical luminaries of the nineteenth century, that today the reference to him has become standard for integrity and completeness. Pagel’s directory is interesting not only as a collection of biographies of several thousand doctors of the nineteenth century, whose names are today recognized by the average intelligent reader, who in fact knows at least 3–4 names, but as an appreciation of their achievements.
