Summary/Abstract: Tumours of the CNS derive from the brain and spinal cord, and from their menings with varying degrees of maturity and evolution of development. They, per se, represent a therapeutic challenge. We performed a retrospective longitudinal analysis of the incidence and prevalence of CNS tumours in three regions of South Bulgaria – Plovdiv, Pazardzhik and Smolyan, with a total patient cohort of 1,269,464 people for a period of 25 years (1986–2011). The morbidity incidence increased from 3.4 cases per 100 000 population in 1986 to 7.2 cases per 100 000 population in 2011 for all the three regions. Increased morbidity risk for development of CNS malignancies is found in patients with genetically inherited syndromes such as the NFNeurofibromatosis or von Recklinghausen’s disease, TSC- Tuberous sclerosis complex or Bourneville’s disease and Turcot syndrome. Five year survival with brain and spinal cord neoplasms according to the histological type is in wide ranges – from 2.5% to 81.5% of cases for the objective histological type.
