Summary/Abstract: Commemoration of Imre Katona, born 100 years ago Imre Katona first visited Tito's Yugoslavia in 1962 with a research scholarship from the Hungarian state. According to his travel diary, this scholarship provided him with the opportunity to map out the Yugoslav museum and scientific institutions as well as the Hungarian intelligentsia of the time and to make proposals for the implementation of some joint research programs. During his meeting with Ervin Sinkó and Olga Penavin, Katona presented his research idea called “Following the footsteps of Lajos Kálmány”, i.e. the possibility of fieldwork in the collection area of Lajos Kálmány, the details of which can be found in the notes in the Csongrád County Archives, under the heading “Topics and things to do”, under the entry “Kálmány: Csóka, Lőrincfalva, Magyarszentmárton, Morotva, Németelemér, Ószentiván, Szaján, Padé, Törökbecse, Verbica”. In our thesis, reviewing the forementioned trip to Yugoslavia and its history of influence, we ask about the role of Imre Katona in the process of institutionalization of Hungarian folkloristics in Yugoslavia. In our opinion, Katona played a decisive role in the “discovery” and “localization” of Lajos Kálmány’s work in Yugoslavia, which is why we are attempting to view the processes taking place in the institutionalization of Hungarian ethnography in Vojvodina in a historical framework, also addressing their social and political aspects. The sources of our work are the documents of Dr. Imre Katona’s fonds1 located in the Csongrád–Csanád County Archives and the newspaper articles related to our topic published in Magyar Szób between 1945 and 1990. In addition to the above, Imre Katona’s posthumous publication “Tisza sélin, Duna hosszán” published in 2004, containing travel notes and the last conversations related to him, was of assistance to us.
