Summary/Abstract: The system of cooperation in Romania began to develop at the end of the XIX century. One of its promoters was Ion Raducanu, former corresponding member of the Romanian Academy and minister of finance. However, the peak was reached during Spiru Haret's mandate at the Ministry of Public Instruction, through the direct involvement of teachers and priests for the establishment of popular banks, especially in Braila, Buzau, Ilfov or Putna counties. The initial shortcomings, due to the weak purchasing power of the national currency and fluctuations in the share capital, were overcome over time. In 1930, in Braila was founded, among others, the People’s Bank of the Primary Teaching Staff, whose first president was appointed Dobre Stanciu. After the approval of the statute by the Braila Urban Court, both teachers in activity and retirement could acquire the quality of members, and the loans were granted for personal and professional needs. Archival documents reveal that the bank ceased operations on April 18, 1944. In fact, after the end of the Second World War, popular credit banks became an integral part of the national.
