Summary/Abstract: This paper approaches the analysis of palatalizations in the standard languages of the Štokavian area using the comparative method. The Štokavian area encompasses the territories of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Therefore, when referring to the standard languages of this area, we mean Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and Montenegrin. Although these four languages share the same dialectal base (Štokavian dialect), and speakers of these languages can understand each other without difficulty, there are certain grammatical and orthographic rules that define these languages as separate standard languages. The comparative method can be applied at all linguistic levels, but this paper focuses only on the morphonological part, specifically on palatalizations. A comparison of all sound alternations and/or all linguistic levels would be too broad for one paper at this time, but these are certainly valid and interesting topics for future research.
