Summary/Abstract: According to the OECD criteria, Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most rural countries in Europe (60% of the population lives in rural areas). There is also a constant migration of people from rural to urban areas. According to UNDP estimations the share of population living in rural areas is likely to decrease for about 10 percent in each generation. The countries of East and South-East Europe, and BiH as well, are faced with negative demographic trends and the process of accelerated emigration in search for better living conditions. In this context, the authors in this paper analyze the sustainable development of rural areas, the role of family farms and the possibility of alleviating these trends through the development and valorisation of original agro-food products. This means increasing the production of original products. Most rural households earn income in one of two ways: from regular employment (52%) or social benefits (36%), where relatively few of them depend on agriculture, self-employment or investment income. Rural development has not yet been sufficiently affirmed which is result of the lack of quality and systematic incentives, and the lack of consistent rural development policies. Sustainable development of rural areas is possible through the development and affirmation of original products whichdo not make greatcompetitionin the global market but they can overtake market niches and be one of the most important links in alleviating depopulation trends.
