Summary/Abstract: This essay presents the builder Bartel Ranisch, author of one of the most remarkable architectural books to appear in 17th-century Europe. Published in 1695 under the title Beschreibung Aller Kirchen-Gebäude der Stadt Dantzig, it is an illustrated description of Gdańsk’s churches. According to Ranisch, its purpose was to revive the skills required to construct complex architectural forms, particularly rib vaults, and thereby stimulate the city’s architectural development. The essay analyses Ranisch’s work and situates it within his biography, examining his background, education, and role in the local architectural milieu. This approach offers a fuller understanding of the context in which the book was written and sheds light on the architectural culture of Gdańsk in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a subject that has so far remained largely overlooked by researchers.
