Summary/Abstract: This article provides a historical overview of the use of small, elite tactical units to solve various tactical tasks, as part of the army and, at a later stage, by the police. The need for such teams in the world and in the Republic of Bulgaria, from antiquity to their establishment in the modern technological world, is chronologically considered. Their training methods are considered, since the specific tasks they perform differ from those of the regular armed forces in terms of the degree of physical and political risk. In this regard, the personnel of tactical units need to have skills and abilities that exceed those of the regular armed forces and to be able to function in small teams, relying on themselves. Traditionally, in both military special operations forces and police tactical units, performance improvement focuses on the physical component of training. Historically, this component has been a constant in terms of methods and means, and in recent decades new technologies have supported the collection and analysis of information in the field of special tactics and created prerequisites for its improvement.
