Summary/Abstract: The European Arrest Warrant (EAW) is a mechanism for judicial cooperation between the Member States of the European Union introduced to facilitate the extradition of persons suspected of or convicted of serious crimes. Adopted by the Framework Decision 2002/584/JHA of the Council of the European Union, the EAW replaced traditional extradition procedures between EU states, speeding up and simplifying the process of surrendering wanted persons. The main purpose of the warrant is to combat cross-border crime and ensure efficient justice in the European area, eliminating the bureaucratic and political obstacles that existed in classic extradition procedures.
