IMAGES OF EVIL FORCES IN THE LIGHT OF THE MIRACLES OF SAINT BENEDICT OF NURSIA

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the lexical and syntactic means used to identify various images of evil spirits in the Life of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Observing the various ways of naming evil spirits in the work translated from Greek into Serbo-Slavonic, we gain knowledge of the medieval mental picture of the world, relying on one lexical and semantic level of the text. The lexical and syntactic means used by the translator are given along with the Greek originals, which ultimately shows us that the translator of the Life had a very good command of both Serbo-Slavonic and Greek. The translation, which almost completely corresponds to the Greek original, is also a reflection of the time – the Resavian era in which it was made. The images of evil spirits in the studied work are based on ideas confirmed in the Old and New Testament biblical texts and the works of the Holy Fathers, and most of them are also known from folk legends. This study contributes to the elucidation of the vocabulary of a very important monument of the Serbian medieval manuscript heritage, and through its further study we will try to find answers to the question of whether the Dečani 102 manuscript is a copy of an older Serbo-Slavic sample or whether it is a branch of some of the editions of the translations, that is, a retranslation from Greek within the framework of the activities of the Resava School.
