Summary/Abstract: The famous jurisconsults of the classical era of Roman law (Cels, Gaius, Iulianus, Ulpianus, Modestinus etc.) clearly expressed their views on the nature of law. And, under the impact of the juridical-philosophical thought of these Roman jurists, who also had a solid philosophical culture, some philosophers and jurists of the Roman-Byzantine and Byzantine era also left us definitions of law and its nature, from which it follows that law was enunciated and evaluated both in terms of its content produced by its "ratio naturalis" (natural reason) (Gaius), and also by reference to the divine will, hence the sacred character of "jus", which made law a "lex naturae" (law of nature) (Seneca) and a "lex vitae" (rule of life) (Cicero).
