Coding political reality through the concept of totalitarianism

Summary/Abstract: Coding reality with the use of the term “totalitarianism” can be implemented at various levels. At the highestpersuasive level it is consistent with commonly prevailing myths, uses extensive argumentation, and con-tains essential elements of the defi nition. At the lowest level it is a mere calumny — an emotional and un-justifi ed epithet. Decoding reality (not only in the case of totalitarianism) can occur by rigorously meetingthe requirements of defi ning and operationalizing concepts.
