Summary/Abstract: One of the elements of building a competitive advantage is thedevelopment of innovations. With this objective in mind, marketplayers cooperate with other businesses, but also with entities in thescience sector, including research institutes and universities. One ofthe instruments used for this purpose is a consortium agreement,Such cooperation requires defining, first of all, issues related tointellectual property rights. Since personal data may be processed aspart of such agreements, it is important to bring these processes inline with legal requirements under data protection laws, particularlythe GDPR. The article analyzes first of all what personal dataprocessing processes may be applicable in cooperation betweenscience and business in the field of innovation, what roles in terms ofpersonal data protection are played by the various entities and whatobligations they entail, what special obligations in terms of personaldata protection arise from the establishment of internationalconsortia, including with entities from countries outside theEuropean Economic Area, and are the rules that govern theresponsibility of these entities for the fulfillment of their obligationsunder personal data protection regulations. Alignment of thecollaborations carried out by consortium members with applicablelegal requirements not only safeguards them legally, but also affectsthe economic and commercialization potential of the resultsgenerated in the course of such collaboration. These entities are thusseen as socially responsible, which fosters trust among science andbusiness partners, public bodies, as well as customers benefiting fromthe innovations created.
