The theological, spiritual and ethical values in the teaching of Jesus - a foundation for interfaith dialog in contemporary Europe

Summary/Abstract: The context created by the European Union has brought together a plurality of faiths, traditions, cultures and religions. The objective realities of European religious and inter-faith pluralism can degenerate into divergent movements characterized by extremism and individualism. These challenges cannot be overcome without an honest and open interfaith dialogue between the existing Christian denominations in Europe. Based on Hans Kung’s observation that there can be no inter-religious dialogue without an investigation of the theological foundations, the aim of this article is to place European ecumenical dialogue in the context of the global and European Christian ecumenical movement, noting the progress and impasse that this dialogue has reached, and to propose overcoming the present impasse by sharing the theological, spiritual and ethical values reflected in the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ as the core values for interfaith dialogue in contemporary Europe.
