Between sword and faith. Sebastian Castellio and the right to believe differently

Summary/Abstract: Sebastian Castellio is a relatively unknown figure to the modern Christian public, yet he was one of the most significant advocates for freedom of conscience and religious pluralism in the 16th century. A vehement critic of religious persecution and theological authoritarianism, Castellio provides us with fundamental principles for understanding the values of education and religious pluralism in the face of contemporary challenges. This study addresses two important questions: 1. How did Castellio contribute to the development of ideas that today support religious freedom, autonomous thinking, and, by extension, education? 2. Why is he relevant in a world marked by individualism and extremism? This study explores Castellio’s theological legacy and the importance of rediscovering his ideas in combating intolerance and extremism in the context of modern education and religion.
