"The breast" as a technical technique, part of the bagpipe performance practice

Summary/Abstract: This article is focused on one of the most specific techniques in the art of bagpipe in Bulgaria- the “karma”, and in particular its use in the region of Varna. The research starts with a literature review, followed by an attempt to explain the concept of the “karma”, the origin of the word, and how it has become a part of the performing practice. The information given by the respondents from one of the regions with a really strong bagpipe tradition (the region of Varna) concerning “karma.`s” amplification is of great value . There are some tips for a better, correct and easy control of this technique, which are very useful for teachers and performers.
