In search of one’s identity and the truth about the Regained Territories – around proper names in Zbigniew Rokita’s Odrzania

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes proper names in Zbigniew Rokita’s Odrzania to address their role in the identity discourse. The author, remaining within the framework of cultural onomastics, examines the proper names in terms of their historical, social, and mental entanglements. Special attention is primarily given to toponyms: their contextual positioning and metaphorical use. The observations lead to several conclusions: toponyms in Zbigniew Rokita’s reportage serve a cultural function – on one hand, they store and document knowledge about reality, and on the other hand, when appropriately situated in context, they convey important social problems. In addition, they become an expression of the worldview of the textual subject and often rise to the level of a symbol or myth. Moreover, highlighting the dichotomy between Odrzania and Wiślania seems important, since the awareness of cultural differences between them significantly affects the formation of identity – a hybrid identity, expressed through constant ambiguities, merging, and interpenetration of cultures.
