Summary/Abstract: The period from the middle of the 1960s to the beginning of the 1970s was particularly fruitful in the development of Bulgarian entertainment, pop, jazz and rock music. Numerous festivals and competitions gave many singers, vocal-instrumental ensembles and young talents a stage and the opportunity to shine. Plovdiv was one of the centres of pop and jazz concert life, but in the newly founded higher school of music – HIMP* in 1964, student education was not associated with this topic. Many of the students delivered their perfor- 43 mances only in existing vocal-instrumental ensembles in the city. It was not until the early 1980s that the discipline „VIA“ (vocal-instrumental ensembles) was opened in HIMP. Students gained knowledge in the field of pop and jazz music, in conducting and participating in student formations in HIMP. Over the following years, the discipline was enriched in content, name, and was developed further.
