Summary/Abstract: The main objective of cohesion policy is to strive for convergence, means to deepen economic, social and territorial cohesion within the European Union. Achieving this goal is possible provided more rapid development of the poorer areas of the Union. This article shows that in the years 1994-2008 the reduction of the gap between the cohesion countries from the average level of the EU-27 and from the EU-15 was reported. The driving force of economic growth of the cohesion countries was greater efficiency increase and employment growth.
