Summary/Abstract: The central idea of Hellenistic spiritual thought was the Logos, a notion that united religious, philosophical, and cosmological ideas. Logos has many meanings, including “reason,” “ratio” or mathematical proportion, “intelligent pattern,” “order,” and “an account” or “that which is spoken.” Unfortunately, Logos is usually translated into English as “Word,” which is highly misleading because it so greatly diminishes the full meaning of the Greek term. When the prologue to the gospel of John starts off with the lines, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” the Greek term Logos appears in the original. (Ironically, in ancient Greek, the one thing logos never means is “word.”)
