Summary/Abstract: The interrelation between ritual and folklore has been studied on the basis of diverse material and from different viewpoints. Therefore concepts should be made precise and, above all, the meaning applied to the concept of “ritual” has to be clearly defined. Ritual is considered in the present article as an event which extends beyond the frames of the normative sphere, an expression of this latter being the custom as a norm. From an informational point of view the role of the ritual is to “check” the cultural model corresponding to the collective. By determining in itself, and through itself, the nature and the meaning of collective life in all its manifestations, the ritual involves in its sign system all the sign levels functioning within the given collective (a “sign systems display”). The relationships between folklore and ritual present a special case of manifestation of the structural qualities of folklore and ethnographic tradition. Folklore, the mythological text, and ritual, all three create the same world model and it is only synchronic relations that matter to them as cultural facts. Besides, it turns out that it is above all semantic relations that are relevant between the narrative texts and the ritual. Finally, the author considers the problems of relation between the ritual and the folklore texts involved in its structure. What is essential here is, that these texts can be regarded as referring to both folklore and ritual, i.e. to two systems, hence the “duality” of their meanings.
