Summary/Abstract: The paper draws attention to the amazing lack of historical perspective in most of the literature on the information society and to the consequent conceptual contradictions concerning time and space in relevant theories. The author analyzes the following three groups of phenomena: ahistorical overweight of the future, hyper-historicity, and false synchronicity. He discusses in detail seven reasons for overemphasizing the future, and points out why it has deleterious effects to inject concepts of an information society into societies that existed well before the mid-20th century, even into agricultural societies or into those at the brink of industrialization.
