Summary/Abstract: Sometime during the 18th century, fishermen from Borsod county in Hungary fished out an elephant's skeleton from the River Tisza. The locals, however, were hardly interested in this exotic "monster", and being content with minding their own business, explained away this scientific mystery by saying that it got there during the great Biblical flood. In this essay, this peculiar anecdote becomes an elaborate metaphor for the complicated relationship between such scientific fields as communication history, the history of information and media history, among others, the relationship between which is elucidated by the author in an ingenious way.
