Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to examine the artistic manifestations of the concept of vagueness, based on the painting of clouds in eighteenth-century France. It presents some of the characteristic functions of cloud painting, by comparing two ways in which clouds were represented by painters and commented on by art critics of the period: on the one hand, the light clouds of rococo painting (the works of Watteau and Fragonard), and on the other hand, those that appear in the sublime seascapes (painted by Vernet and de Loutherbourg).
