On the Mention of Прѣбѣгар (Prebegar) or прѣбѣгар (prebegar) in Brskovo

Summary/Abstract: In the charter of King Dragutin to the authorities of Dubrovnik, which has long been a subject of historiographical research, there is a mention of Прѣбѣгар (Prebegar) or прѣбѣгар (prebegar). In the existing historiographical literature, Aleksandar Solovjev's opinion that Prebegar and comes Freiberger are the same person has been accepted. According to the research done by German slavicist Joseph Schütz, prebegar is not a personal name but rather a term which denotes a title, namely the administrator of Brskovo. We agree with Schütz’s argument that prebegar cannot be equated with the personal name of comes Freiberger of Brskovo. If we were to accept the possibility that Prebegar was a personal name, without a title or indication of social status, it would mean that the document was only significant during the lifetime of the individual in question, which we consider unlikely. Aleksandar Loma believes that Prebegar and Fabrigar are different adaptations of the German word Freiberger, which is accurately recorded as Vreibergerus, and that Freiberger is not a personal name but qualification or a part of a title. Otherwise, the name Pribegar, which could have served as the basis for slavicised form of the title deriving from German, is attested both in archival material from Dubrovnik and in the Ottoman registers.
