Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Poles have difficulties to understand Loreto Litany. The aim of this paper is to indicate most problematic parts of the prayer and the root cause of the misunderstanding. Loreto Litany was written in the spiritual atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The Christian Medieval Monasticism influenced the comprehension of the surrounding world, imagination of people and illustration of religious terminology. Metaphors in the Bible, in texts of the Fathers of the Church or mystics as well as Eucharistic formulas are enigmatic for contemporary people even for those who are religious. Some of the invocations are incomprehensible due to purely linguistic reason that is not related to cultural changes. Over the ages many words have changed their initial meaning.
