Summary/Abstract: The Romanian language coursebook for foreign students – coordinated by Grigore Brâncuș – is, from a diachronic perspective, the first institutionalized Romanian as a foreign language coursebook. By going through it, foreign students are introduced, among other things, to the main Romanian cultural landmarks and have access to the family model accepted in the Romanian society of the second half of the 20th century, when the work coordinated by Brâncuș was published. The present article aims to emphasize a number of aspects related to the Romanian family’s identity, as it is constituted on the basis of the study texts included in the above-mentioned handbook. Perceived as the exponents of cultures that are often totally different from the Romanian one, in which they have chosen to study and learn Romanian, foreign students are presented, through the practical texts in the book, the cultural model of the Romanian family - its structure, parents' occupations, as well as elements related to child-rearing. Briefly, the material aims at answering, with the help of the mentioned textbook, the question: What is the Romanian family like?
