Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on travel in the Balkans in the period up to the beginning of the 20th century. It thematizes specific cultural institutions that initiate, enable, and come into existence thanks to the everyday practice of traveling. It clarifies the specifics that developed on the territory of the Balkan area united under the administration of the Ottoman Empire. Population movement is to be understood here in the broadest possible perspective and includes ethnic, professional or economic migration, forced or voluntary movements of individuals and entire populations.
