Neglected Thessaloniki front of the Great War

Summary/Abstract: The Salonika or Macedonian front was the fourth front on European soil during the Great War. In the history of the war, it tends to be neglected, although in 1918 almost 1,300,000 men stood against each other on it, and its breakthrough by the troops of the Entente Powers became one of the most important events of the war and decisively contributed to the victory of the Entente Powers. This study, therefore, in an effort to commemorate this forgotten epic, recounts, also using source literature, the most important events of the front. It presents the reasons for the opening of the Salonika front and the important battles that took place on it during the years 1916-1918. It does so with an emphasis on the war effort of an humiliated but undefeated Serbian army. It also looks at everyday life at the front and the political background to some of the events. It concludes by describing the circumstances of the breakthrough of the Salonika Front and the reasons for its post-war neglect. He also notes the traces that the war operations have left in the landscape of northern Greece and the area of Mariovo in northern Macedonia to this day.
