Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyze one of the specific elements in the field of public health – the compulsory health care insurance system of the Republic of Moldova – in order to highlight its evolution and particularities from the moment of its implementation to the present, analyze the achievements and challenges it faces, as well as to relate it to the EU health strategy. The scientific approach aims to highlight the challenges of the transition from the Semashko model of health care, existing at the national level until 2004, to the Bismarck model of health insurance, to analyze the evolution of health policy documents in order to highlight the state’s optics at different stages of the reforms carried out, to examine the achievements of the compulsory health care insurance system, as well as the problems that remained unsolved during the two decades of the implementation of the Bismarckian model of health care at the national level.
