Summary/Abstract: The central topic of the paper is the Contest for the Best New Croatian Word organized by the Jezik language magazine. The results of the contest are announced on the occasion of the Croatian Language Days. The Declaration on the Name and Position of the Croatian Literary Language (1967) is interpreted as a reaction to the Novi Sad Agreement (1954), which spread the unitarian language policy at the expense of the Croatian language. The award bears the name of dr. Ivan Šreter. His martyrdom is discussed as well as his connection to the Contest. In 1987, dr. Ivan Šreter was vilified for having used two Croatian words for a retired officer (umirovljeni časnik) instead of using Serbisms penzionisani oficir. This year the board refrained from proclaiming the best new words, but the paper highlights certain words that came to the attention of some board members.
