Summary/Abstract: The number of learners of French (as well as German and Italian) in Croa-tia has been steadily decreasing since the 1990s, with important repercus-sions for the entire educational system and for the Croatian society, whereCroatian-English bilingualism is gaining ground. This article exploresconsequences of this trend on translation studies and translation researchfor the French-Croatian pair in Croatian universities. It highlights struc-tural problems of the educational system, as well as consequences of thehegemony of the English language in translation research. Figures collec-ted from various sources on translators and translations from French intoCroatian are not too optimistic, but the activities of translators’ associationsreveal possible tracks for future research.
