Summary/Abstract: From the earliest times, people have used materials which can be found in nature. The primary so-called conventional materials were wood, stone and clay in their elementary form. The discovery of fire enabled humans to process mineral raw materials into more practical forms – gypsum, bricks, ceramics, metals and glass. Mineral materials which have been in use for over two millennia were joined in the 20th century by concrete and polymers. The third technological revolution of the 21st century brought about conventional materials with improved proprieties. Stone, ceramics, glass, concrete, metals, wood and other materials of vegetal origin, and polymers, acquire through specific procedures of production, processing, as well as with the assistance of nanotechnology, fresh possibilities of utilisation.
