Summary/Abstract: In Austria, the process of state intervention in the field of education began in the early 18th century with demands for changes in the curriculum of Jesuit colleges. The process reached one of its culminations in 1774 in the General School Ordinance (Allgemeine Schulordnung), the first elementary school legislation. A state or public system of schooling was established. In the paper, we discuss the educational objectives in the broadest sense envisaged by the General School Ordinance and present them in the light of the predominantly Enlightenment pedagogical concepts of the time.
