Is there a deviant subculture in digital reality? A qualitative content analysis of the Hyperreal forum

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the online activity of users of the Hyperreal discussion forum, where drugsand related issues are the leading topics. Qualitative content analysis was carried out on a number ofstatements made by forum users, which were selected by the purposive sampling method. The articleconstitutes an attempt to answer the question of whether the Hyperreal online forum communityform a deviant subculture. In the search for an answer, a list of characteristics of a deviant subcultureis explored, such as the use of slang, the support for those who violate social norms or the presenceof shared values. The article is also concerned with the role of the forum as a digital interaction spacethat has a key influence on the production of the aforementioned subculture. The content analysisidentifies several features distinctive to deviant subcultures in the examined Hyperreal community.
