Summary/Abstract: The article presents the systematic growth of interest in the ethical side of sociological research, which occurred in parallel with the expansion of the research domain. The formula of “social re- search”, with its political and commercial potential, was created in isolation from the ethos of aca- demic sociology. It functions as an independent communication circuit, for which external ethical control tools are developed: codes and ethics committees. The reciprocal influence of social research on sociological research, which takes place at the level of education and research practice, makes them subject to excessive external control, to the detriment of their contribution to the corpus of sci- ence. A possible way to rectify the situation is to establish university research teams whose composi- tion and tasks would allow for the reintegration of research with the theoretical and methodologicalorientation of sociology or for conscious scientific interdisciplinarity. In such an institutional setting, the imperative of “avoiding harm” would extend not only to subjects and researchers but also to the discipline.
