Summary/Abstract: The article presents some biographical data and information regarding the activity of two lesser-known figures (father and son) who made significant contributions to the social and cultural life of Bukovina in the 19th century. Karl Johann Umlauff was a respected magistrate, serving as president of the ChernivtsiCourt of Law for 15 years and as a member of the Provincial Committee of Bukovina. He distinguished himself as a fervent supporter of modernizing the judicial system in Bukovina. Additionally, he supported the efforts of the Bukovinian elite in projects such as the establishment of the Country Library, improving the situation of primary education in the Romanian language, and founding a Romanian Language Department and a Law Faculty in Chernivtsi. A contemporary of the 1848 Revolution, Karl JohannUmlauff von Frankwell officially advocated for the rights of Romanians and for the administrative independence of Bukovina from Galicia. Viktor Umlauff pursued a career in the legal field as well, and had noteworthy literary interests. Passionate about Romanian history, he wrote verses inspired by the works of Dimitrie Bolintineanu and Vasile Alecsandri, and translated the latterʼs poems into German. At the request of the notable figures of their time, Karl Johann and Viktor Umlauff were granted the noble title “von Frankwell” for their merits.
